Closet Rebuild Project Gallery |
| May 2, 2005 (Day 3) - Before we moved into our house, we knew that storage would be an issue and the worst abuser seemed to be the Master Closet. A lot of boxes could be stored there, but only 10-15 clothes hangers. Thus, this became the "first" project. The next step was to find a configuration to maximize the amount of clothes. This was the final proposed floor plan. It created a new linen closet and used the full distance on two walls to hang clothes. These plans were approved by the lead supervisor (Tina).
Initial design started on April 29, day one of the project.
This shows the height of the linen closet as well as the positioning of the clothes rods. The long wall will have two sets of clothes rods with a shelf over each. The narrow wall is built more for dresses. Okay, maybe this drawing is being too geeky, but wanted to make sure it would all fit.

June 9 (Day 41) - First day of construction / demolition. This photo of left wall was taken after the existing shelves were removed.

Definitely not a huge closet to begin with. Note the white wood panel on floor in back of closet, possibly a narrow shoe rack. After this was removed, there was no carpet - thus the carpet "hole" in later pics.

June 11 (Day 43) - Trail of tears as Eric relocates the closes to the living room.
Scope creep... Instead of only removing all the plaster where the linen closet will be, have to remove all non-ceiling plaster. Too fragile and no studs where I needed them to be.
Found an old rat's home in upper right hand corner. Smelled like it too.
Zachary and I had a bonding experience taking this to the dump. Renée also went, though she decided to take a nap and not help unload the truck.
July 10 (Day 72) - Scope creep... Since we have access to the studs, added a light to the closet. Wiring in the attic presented another challenge. Attic is only about 2 feet tall and all electrical wiring is old.
Scope creep... Since we have access to the dinning room wall, added a phone line plug.
Restrung wire through frame. Spent a lot of time just finding and removing unused wire. The previous owner(s) just added wire when there was a wiring issue instead of repairing the issue.
July 12 (Day 74) - Zachary and Eric are framing the linen closet. This will also be the supports for the rods for the clothes. Installed the upper sheet rock on long wall before framing - otherwise could not have gotten it in.
July 18 (Day 80) - The new linen closet a la dry wall.

Dry wall around the closet light. Definitely learned many lessons in using dry wall. But more importantly, Eric did not have to buy additional sheets!!! The only item that was underestimated was the mud - and quite underestimated at that. All in all, the parts inventory for this project was appropriately maintained.
| July 31 (Day 93) - The linen closet is complete!!!
Since Tina wants the vacuum below, there is room for only 4 shelves. Unto itself, this linen closet will not greatly change the storage capacity of the house. However it provides the structural support for the three shelves and clothes rods in the master closet, which is the primary objective.
It does not take long for Tina to organize this space.
| Renée is modeling the vacuum - actually she is touching it while saying 'No No', meaning 'no touch'. Go figure.
It was not in my plans to have the vacuum fit - Tina tells me that we're fortunate that it fits. The designed depth of the linen closet was solely based on the shelf width in the master closet.
August 6 (Day 99) - Trying to complete the closet by this weekend, had all fans going to dry the textured mud as quick as possible, so that the shelving could be installed and then the closet painted. Due to other circumstances, was unable to complete the closet this weekend.
Same closet, different angle. Due to the small closet with odd angles, found it quite difficult to pictorially document - thus multiple pictures.
| August 14 (Day 107) - 'Hey Dad, I'm ready to help you put up the shelving! Let's go...
Baseboards installed after scraping off most of the old "cheap" paint. Was able to reuse most of the previous baseboards. Another design omission that fell into place - the vacuum fits (and just barely) in the space in which Renée is standing.

View of the ceiling. With these shelves installed, no longer have access to the attic. Actually, a small child could get through... "Hey Zach, can you come here for a minute!"
| August 16 (Day 109) - Project complete (minus clean up) - 109 days since initial design, 68 days since demolition began. It is now primed, painted (with ultra white gloss - they say it makes a small closet feel bigger) with clothes rods installed.
